What are Media Files in Kodi

Media Files for Kodi come in many different formats.

  • Video formats: MPEG-1, MPEG-2, H.263, MPEG-4 SP and ASP, MPEG-4 AVC (H.264), HEVC (H.265), HuffYUV, Indeo, MJPEG, RealVideo, RMVB, Sorenson, VP8, VP9, WMV, Cinepak.
  • Audio formats: MIDI, AIFF, WAV/WAVE, MP2, MP3, AAC, AACplus (AAC+), Vorbis, AC3, DTS, ALAC, AMR, FLAC, Monkey’s Audio (APE), RealAudio.
  • Container formatsAVIMPEGWMVASFFLVMKV/MKA (Matroska)QuickTime, MP4 just to name a few.

For this article we’ll be discussing how you can enable your personal Media/Movie Files in Kodi. Because many users know Kodi only as a 3rd party add-on installer, they may have not realized just how versatile Kodi is. First of all, Kodi is an open source media player and therefore it supports most common audio, video, and image formats, playlists, audio visualizations, slideshows, weather forecasts reporting, and third-party plugins.

Installing Media Files

All of our Skin reviews are based on Krypton 17.6. If you have a newly installed version of krypton don’t forget to allow Unknown Sources by ;

  • Click Settings (Cog Icon).
  • Choose System Settings.
  • Select Add-ons.
  • Click Unknown Sources.
  • A pop-up will appear.

“Add-ons will be given access to personal data stored on this device. By allowing, you agree that you are solely responsible for any loss of data, unwanted behavior, or damage to your device. Proceed?”

After opening Kodi, highlight Videos and then select Files as shown in the photo above.

In the next screen, select Add videos... Due to what add-ons you may or may not have installed already, your list may not appear the same as the example shown.

Browsing Your Media Files

Consequently, after selecting Add videos, the next screen you will see will ask you to enter the path of your media files. Because nothing currently is enabled, select Browse to continue.

Since these screenshots are generated from my PC, your screen will appear different than what is shown here. Nevertheless, click the file location you have your media files stored. This may be an External HD as I have or a USB Flash Drive for example. Click OK to continue.

Select OK to start the next step.

As a result, you will prompted to name the media source. This should be done automatically, if not or if you prefer something else, change the name and select OK to continue.

Setting the Content

The last step is setting the content of the directory, Click OK ! Now that wasn’t so hard now was it. If you have other folders in the media source, and wish to not include them, enable “Exclude selected folders from scans”. You will then have to enter those folders manually.

Immediately after selecting OK, you will now see the Media Files found in the source file selected. Simply choose a file to play in the default player.

Finally, the next time you open Files, you see the media source, in this case, M:. Yours will be different.

In Conclusion
