Apple announces the death of the AirPower Mat

When Apple unveiled the new lineup of Products in their September 2017 event they unveiled their wireless charging mat AirPower which would be the only device capable of charging the series 3 Apple Watch without any extra wires, version 2 of their AirPods and also both the iPhone 8/8+ and iPhone X.

Since then we haven’t heard anymore of this device and we have seen several clones release which offer charging features with several workarounds.

Apple missed their 2018 deadline and even removed most of their references to AirPower from their website causing speculation that it had in fact been scrapped. Apple even moved on to release Apple Watch series 4 which still doesn’t have the ability to charge wirelessly on third party charging mats without the charging puck.

Today after more than a year Apple has confirmed that the AirPower mat project has been scraped.

In a statement Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering Dan Riccio said “After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward.”

AirPower may not be dead yet

After missing their deadline Apple has remained silent over AirPower and even removing all traces of it from their website. Many have speculated that Apple scrapped AirPower.

Recently there have been rumours that AirPower has been in production after some initial problems and most recently new rumours that AirPower was ready to ship. Yesterday 9to5mac added fuel to the fire that AirPower launch is imminent when they spotted references of it in the code of iOS 12.2 beta.

AirPower mat and AirPods version 2 expected to release September 12th (rumour)

It’s been almost a year since Apple unveiled their AirPower Mat and version 2 of their AirPods with wireless charging. Since Apple announced these new products we have seen very little regarding their release however, many are speculating that Apple will launch these on September 12th 2018 the same day as their event to unveiled the new iPhone and Apple Watch.

AirPower Mat

Apple didn’t give an official release date for the AirPower Mat just that it would be late 2018 and we are almost at the end of the year, Apple has seen several delays in their products including the original AirPods and even the HomePod.

AirPods

AirPods have been a massive success since they launched and version 2 offered a new case capable of being wirelessly charged using the AirPower Mat.

Let us know if you think Apple will release these new products, or if they will even mention them in the Event itself.

Latest Apple Rumours

Apple rumours are almost a daily occurrence and today is no different, Apple is rumoured to be releasing an update to the popular AirPods which will see an upgrade from the current Apple-designed W1 wireless chip to the W2 chip, found in the Apple Watch Series 3. We currently know Apple will be issuing an update to the existing line with wireless charging case.

Another rumour is that in 2019 Apple will also be issuing an upgrade to the AirPods so they will be “water-resistant” (resistant to splashes, but not being submerged), AirPods are at least partly water-resistant already.

Apple is rumoured to be releasing their AirPower Mat in March, the rumour comes after a brief report published Thursday, Mac Otakara, citing a reliable source. The AirPower mat was announced by Apple last year stating the mat will be able to wirelessly charge the Apple Watch series 3, iPhone X, iPhone 8/8+ and new AirPods with a wireless charging case, there currently is no release date set for the new wireless charging AirPods.
