Kodi 18 Mimic Skin review

Kodi 18 Mimic Skin

mimic

The Mimic Skin by Braz is version 6.0.0. It’s a shameless amalgamation of features from his favorite skins. Including Aeon Nox, reFocus and Arctic Zephyr.

This will be last (for now) in our series of Kodi 18 / Leia Skin reviews, the Mimic Skin is the most recent. While most of the settings are of the basic nature, there are a few nice changes that are appealing to use. But for now lets proceed with installing the Mimic Skin.

How to install the Mimic Skin

mimic

  • Step 1, select the Cog icon found in top left corner of the main home page.
  • Step 2, Click on Interface.

mimic

  • In Step 3, Highlight Skin, then move the cursor to the right and select Skin again.
  • Step 4, Move the cursor to the right and click on Get more... Mimic will be found at the bottom of the next screen. Click to install.
  • IF you do not see it listed, you can download the zip file from github from here.

mimic

After downloading the zip file and installing the skin, select YES when prompted to switch.

mimic

In the next screen you’ll be prompted again to keep the change, select YES. There will be an installation notification show at the top of your screen.

mimic

Once Yes is selected, you will see two screens as shown above. 1. Is the immediate screen shown and 2. is what you will see after selecting the back button or using the right button on the mouse. Hit back button on the remote or right click mouse to open the “Home Page”.

Mimic Skin Home Page

mimic

The menu by default is listed Vertically, I’ll show you how to switch it to Horizontal further on in this review. Movies, TV Shows, Music Videos and Favorites are where you’ll find any of the above added by you, the user. I’ve not added anything so there’s nothing to show you.

Music

mimic

If you’ve added any of your own personal Music files, they will appear as shown above.

Add-ons

mimic

Above is an example of what will be shown when Add-ons is highlighted. Of course your selection will/may be different from the above photo.

Consequently, after selecting Add-ons, you will now be shown all the Add-ons Installed on your version of Kodi.

Search

mimic

Selecting Search will open a new window where you are able to do search of what’s installed or related to Kodi 18.

Settings

mimic

Once you have selected Settings, you will have access to heart of Kodi 18 where you will be able to configure to your own personal settings.

File Manager

mimic

Accessing File Manager is quite easy, but unfortunately it did not show in the Settings Photo above. When highlighted with the cursor, you will see an Arrow pointing down. Moving the cursor over it will show you four (4) additional options including File Manager. Select to continue.

  • Select Add Source as shown in Photo 1.
  • Click on None as indicated in Photo 2.

  • Photo 3– A new window will appear with a keyboard.
  • Enter the url address and select Done when completed. Please ensure the spelling, punctuation is correct, many mistakes are made at this point. If an error occurs, this would be the first place to examine.
  • Photo 4– You will then be asked to give the url source a name. Once entered, select OK to continue. If everything is correct, you’ll be taken back to the same screen shown in Photo 1 above.

Power or Quit Options

mimic

Locating the Power Off or Quit option is done exactly the same as File Manager.

Menu Option Position

As explained earlier, if you prefer to have your Menu Icons listed Horizontally along the bottom as opposed to the default Vertical position, do the following steps.

  • Highlight Settings.
  • Move cursor to the right and select Skin.
  • Highlight Home Window as shown above.
  • Click Menu Position and Vertical will change to Horizontal. That is Option 1.

As a result, you now have the Menu Options listed at the bottom of the page, which to be honest is preferred by most. To access any of the sub-menus, just use the down arrow on your keyboard or the down direction on the remote.

The Option 2 shown above will be enabled only in the default Horizontal Position. Once Vertical is selected, the above option is disabled. This is a personal preference but easily changed either way.

In Conclusion

The Mimic Skin isn’t as “flashy” as some other skins available for Kodi 18, but it is a very easy, clean skin for anyone to use.

Until more Skins for Kodi 18 become available, I’ll be taking a break from these reviews. I’ll be concentrating on some other blogs/reviews about Kodi in the very near future. I’d like to thank all of those who took the time to read these articles and hope it’s made your journey using Kodi 18 Skins a bit more enjoyable. Aeon MQ 8 Kodi 18 Skin Review

Aeon MQ 8 Kodi 18 Skin

aeon mq

Every once in a while you come across a Skin that makes you stop and take a long look. The Aeon MQ 7 was such a skin for me. Well looks like they’ve done it again with the Aeon MQ 8 for Kodi 18 skin.

The traditional Aeon MQ 8 has reached it’s eighth edition. Reformulated and simple to use with a new code that provides a lightweight and powerful skin.

The Aeon MQ 8 incorporates some new features such as Flexible Widgets 2nd Generation. It takes the main menu’s level of customization to something you’ve never seen before. Developed by MarcosQui, the most current version is 2.8.0

Installing Aeon MQ 8

  • Step 1, select the Cog icon found in top left corner of the main home page.
  • Step 2, Click on Interface.

  • In Step 3, Highlight Skin, then move the cursor to the right and select Skin again.
  • Step 4, Move the cursor to the right and click on Get more... Aeon MQ 8 will be found at the top of the next screen. Click to install.

aeon mq

  • Photo A– After downloading, select Yes when prompted to accept the change.
  • Photo B- At this point, the Skin needs to install a number of dependencies and settings for the skin to operate correctly. Normally this will take under a minute to complete, so sit back and watch the progress.

The Home Page

aeon mq

First of all, you’ll notice that this skin is configured towards using a keyboard. If you prefer to use a mouse or touch please do the following:

aeon mq

  • Scroll either left or right until you see System and click.
  • Select System/ Device Adjustment.

aeon mq

  • Scroll down to INPUT.
  • Move cursor to Enable Mouse and Touch Screen Support.
  • Click anywhere in that area to Enable as shown in the photo above. Keep in mind that the keyboard is still enabled, you’ll just have more “pin point” control with the mouse/touch enabled.

While most skins have their own background photo media installed, nothing comes close (in my opinion) to Aeon MQ 8. So much so that I will leave them as is. But that’s entirely up to each individual user and their like and dislikes.

Movies

aeon mq

Using the down arrow or swiping down if using Touch, will enable the Sub Menu found under each Option Icon. Far to many to mention here as you can see, but there is a “Widget Manager”.

This can be accessed by hitting the Up Arrow on the keyboard as seen above. The same menu above will appear no matter what Icon you are in at the time.

TV Shows

Concerts

Music

Live TV

Radio

Favorites for Aeon MQ 8

aeon mq

Any media files you may have saved or designated as a Favorite will appear here. You may have already noticed the other options available in the Sub Menu. A few Power options as well as a shortcut to Customize Main Menu and Skin Settings.

Games

Games Add-on Browser is a new feature found in Kodi 18 for all you gamers.

Aeon MQ 8 Programs

A very nice feature found in Aeon MQ 8 is the ease of accessing all of the Programs installed in your Kodi 18. In addition to Program Add-ons, you can open Video- Music- Game and Picture Add-ons. All at the touch of a button.

Images

Weather

I happen to like to have the Weather Icon enabled. I particularly appreciate the options found in the Sub Menu that give me the option of getting a quick look of what to expect in my area. But that’s me. Enable this option or you may remove it completely in the Skin settings.

System

Because it’s labelled as Settings, I still refer to it as System. The heart and soul of your Kodi version. The above photo indicates what is available when the Sub Menu is activated. Another version of the same can be found at the top of this article under Home Page. The second photo shown is what you’ll see when Settings is selected instead of acquiring the Sub Menu.

Shutdown or Power Options

Just some of the many Shutdown or Power options available. Again, depending on what device you may be using, you may see a different selection compared to mine.

Extras

Extras ? A Bonus option. This may be removed via the Skin Settings if you have no idea (like me) what to use this for. The options are endless.

File Manager

aeon mq

Finally, using the File Manager has not changed at all. Just where it’s located and how it looks in each Skin. Which is the sole purpose of these articles. Giving you the user a first look at what is inside a new skin and letting you decide if it’s right for you. File Manager in Aeon MQ 8 is located in the Settings Sub Menu, select to continue.

Rather than explaining how to use File Manager, I’d just like to remind everyone to ensure the spelling and grammar are correct when entering the url source. As well as not forgetting to hit OK before exiting.

In Conclusion

First of all, I want to thank you for taking the time to read this article and while I do apologize for it’s length, I do feel that it was necessary. To do this Skin the justice it deserves, I’ve had to add some screenshots as a single photo unlike my other  reviews.

The Aeon MQ 8 is with out a doubt my favorite skin for Kodi 18/Leia. The background images are especially relevant to the Icon selected. The ease of accessing everything installed on my version is second to none. It’s clean, fast and easy to use. If you wish to learn more about this and many other skins from MarcosQui, here’s a link to their forum. You may need to have a translator installed as the site is from Brazil. Or here, MarcosQui website. Please stop by Geeks Corner for more topics of interest.

Aeon Tajo Kodi 18 Skin Review

aeon tajo

aeon tajo

Aeon Tajo Skin

Aeon Tajo is the latest skin we’re reviewing in our series of Kodi 18 Skins. Inspired on Aeon Nox 5, with thanks to BigNoid,  it changes everything so nothing changes. Authored by manfeed, the most current version is 1.3.9.

Installing Aeon Tajo Skin

There are two ways to download this skin. The easiest method is to install the skin using the skin Interface.

Step 1.– Select the Cog Icon located at the top left corner of the home page of Kodi 18.

Step 2.– Scroll down to Interface and select.

Step 3.– While highlighting Skin, move the cursor to the right and click on Skin. You will notice that the skin currently in use will always be seen here. In this case, the Estuary Skin.

Step 4.– Move the cursor to the right and select Get more to continue.

aeon tajo

Step 5.– Scroll down to Aeon Tajo and click to install. Wait for the download / installation to finish.

Step 6.– Once completed, you will be prompted to keep the change, select Yes to continue. While most skins are available, occasionally some may not be appear after searching in get more. If this happens to you, you can download and install the zip file for Aeon Tajo Skin via File Manager from this link.

Aeon Tajo Home Page

Music, Movies, TV Shows and Live TV

aeon tajo

  • Photo A- Music shows a sub menu that will appear after you select the down arrow on the keyboard or down button on the remote. There you will find Files – Add-ons – Library. These are shortcuts if you have any Music installed or downloaded to your library.
  • Photo B- Movies, also has a sub menu tho different from Music, it serves the same purpose. It’s a shortcut.
  • In Photo’s C and D, TV Shows & Live TV there are no sub menus present.

Videos, Games, Apps and System

aeon tajo

  • Photo E- Videos sub menu has Add-ons-Files-Playlists-Library. If you have downloaded or have stored some of your personal Videos, they can be accessed here.
  • Photo F- Games. A sub menu will be visible once you install/download any games.
  • Photo G- Apps, or also known as Add-ons. Will give you access to your Music-Video- Add-on Browser- Program and Picture Add-ons when the sub menu is selected.
  • Photo H- SystemSystem Info- Event Log- Skin Settings- File Manager and Profiles are found in this sub menu.

Power, Favorites and Weather

aeon tajo

  • Photo I- Power. First of all, what you see here may not be what you see when the Power Icon sub menu is selected. These screenshots were acquired using a PC, so the options shown here are related to my PC. Consequently, if using an Android device you may see different power options. Shown here are Power Off SystemRebootSuspendHibernate– and Quit.
  • Photo J- Favorites. If you have saved or designated any media Files as a Favorite, they will appear in the highlighted area shown.
  • Photo K- Weather.
  • Photo L– After selecting the Weather Icon, the next page you’ll see is the current (or overview) weather conditions for the location you have selected. Furthermore, you will also see 10 day Forecast- 36 Hour Forecast- Weekend and Hourly Forecasts.

aeon tajo

The above Photo is an example of what you’ll see when selecting the Power Icon directly. Two more options are found there: Settings and Favorites. Lots of shortcuts are available in this skin.

Concerts and Pictures

Photo’s M & N are pretty straightforward and need no explanation.

System

aeon tajo

Accessing System is as easy as… well clicking on the System Icon ! As a result, you will be able to adjust a few more settings that are not customarily found in the Sub-menu. You will notice at the bottom of the page there is a brief description of what each separate icon has available.

Add-on Browser

To open the Add-on Browser:

  1. Under the APPS Icon, enable the Sub-menu and click on Add-on browser.
  2. In addition to My Add-ons, you will also find Install from repository, Install from zip file and Search.

File Manager

  1. Select File manger from the Sub-menu from the System Icon.
  2. Click on Add source and then on None (not shown, sorry my bad)
  3. Enter the url source and select Done when completed. Make sure you have entered the url address correctly. This includes periods . commas , and a common mistake ( i confess to this one) not adding the second forward slash /. A simple mistake will cause an error not allowing that url source to be entered.
  4. You will then be asked to give the source a name. Give it a name you will remember or is appropriate to the url name and click on OK to exit. See the photo below for Steps 3 & 4.

How to remove GUI Audio in Aeon Tajo Skin

aeon tajo

I actually came across this by accident. I don’t normally have the sound on my PC when researching these skins. But I happened to try a Movie File and when I increased the volume, I heard a secondary audio. Having never experienced this before, I discovered there was a melody playing in the background.

While pleasant, I really didn’t want it enabled (it turns off automatically when a Movie or Audio File starts) If you wish to disable this feature, please do the following steps:

  1. Select the SYSTEM Icon.
  2. Click on INTERFACE.
  3. Highlight SKIN.
  4. Move the Cursor to the RIGHT and DOWN to CONFIGURE SKIN.
  5. In HOME WINDOW, move to the right and scroll DOWN to “Don’t play melodies while in Home Screen” as shown above.
  6. Click anywhere in the area to disable the radio bar as shown.
  7. And you’re done.

In Conclusion

The Aeon Tajo Skin is an easy skin to use and get around within Kodi 18 and has become one of my favorite skins to use. Pleasant on the eyes, can be used with either a remote or a Mouse / Keyboard combination. Which is what I prefer, but that’s personal and may not be right for you. We don’t try to show you how to set up a skin, that’s entirely up to you. If you wish to know more about setting up a skin in Kodi please try this link here or here. Thank you for reading this article. For more interesting articles on Android or iOS topics please visit us at Geeks Corner.

Player Icon Settings, Part Three.

player icon

player icon

Player Icon Settings

Player Icon Settings can vary from one skin to another. In a perfect world these would all be the same. Sometimes the changes can appear to be drastic and complicated. Due to the design the developer of the Skin, these settings can be either very complex, or very simple.

In Part Three of our series of Tasso’s Tips©®, our focus will be showing you the reader, where each Skin’s Player settings are. Most of all, showing you how to access some underused player controls. For more info on Kodi player settings, see this link. Part One of this series can be found here. Part Two is here.

In this third and last part in the series, we will look at Titan Beta Skin, Transparency Skin and Unity Skin.

Titan Player Icon Settings

player icon

Because there are the standard icons that are self explanatory, we’ll stick to the ones that the user may not know or understand. Moving from left to right as shown in the red highlighted area above:

  • Repeat – Not used by many but handy for short movies to keep the young ones busy.
  • Bookmarks.
  • Volume.
  • Video.
  • Subtitles.
  • Information.

Bookmarks

player icon

Since many of us expect to sit down and view a media file in it’s entirety, occasionally there are interruptions. If you need to stop playing the file but wish to return to the last place saved, you may select bookmark icon and create a bookmark.

Audio and Video

player icon

In Photo A after selecting the Audio player icon, you will have the option of adjusting the Audio Volume, Enable or Disable Subtitles. Depending on the stream source you may also be able to change the Audio Stream. These are just a few of the settings available.

Photo B is the settings for Video. Where, among others, you can alter the Brightness or Contrast, View Mode and Zoom.

Subtitle and Information

player icon

Photo C indicates what you will see after selecting the Subtitle Icon. If you have a Subtitle Service enabled in Kodi, you will see the available subtitles for the media file being viewed at the time. For more information on enabling Subtitles, please see this link.

Photo D, shows the information about the media file itself when selected.

Video and Audio Codec

player icon

First of all, this is one of my favorite and easy to access bit of information about the stream itself. By simply hitting the letter O on a keyboard (if enabled either via wireless or if connected to the device being used) you will see 3 sets of information.

  1. Video Process Information– I zero in on the resolution. In this example it’s 1920 x 800 px.
  2. Audio Process Information– Both of these confirm you are streaming a file labelled as 1080p  @ H.264 codec and with AC3 Audio 5.1. Not all sources come a advertised, this is an excellent way to confirm what’s been labelled.
  3. System Information– A great indication what loads are on the device being used. This is very helpful for those of you viewing 4K Streams. If the loads are higher than normal (and they usually are with 4K) you may make adjustments within Kodi to prevent buffering.

Transparency Player Icon Settings

player icon

In addition to the standard controls shown at the left side of the photo above, you’ll find moving from left to right:

  • Audio.
  • Video.
  • Bookmark.
  • Subtitles.
  • Information.

Audio and Audio

player icon

In Photo A, much like other players, you may alter the Audio/Volume settings as well as Enable/Disable Subtitles. One exception in this example is the Audio Stream. There is only one version of English AC3 5.1 and can not be changed.

Photo B, Video settings is where you may, if needed, tweak the settings to your personal choice.

Bookmarks and Subtitles

player icon

Photo C, Bookmarks– If you need to stop playing the file but wish to return to the last place saved, you may select bookmark icon and create a bookmark.

Photo D, Subtitles– As mentioned earlier, if a service is enabled in kodi, you can find subtitles for the media file being viewed. Use this link for more Info.

Information and Codecs

player icon

Photo EInformation provides a description of the media file. But in Photo F Codecs, you’ll notice the layout is slightly different from other players. It still provides the codecs for the stream but in a different layout.

Unity Player Icon Settings

player icon

Our final player is found in the Unity Skin. Bright, clear and easy to read and use. As I have described in the other reviews about the letter O to find the codec details, it’s not necessary here. As you can see once you have clicked anywhere on the screen, the player settings menu will appear. Providing you with the needed player icons you are able to use, including the Resolution, Video codec (H.264) and Audio. Of course if you’re like me, you may still select the letter O on the keyboard (if provided) to confirm the settings.

Video and Audio Settings

player icon

Photos A & B are not unlike the other player settings found in other skins, these all do the same job. Albeit in a different layout from each other, but basically the same.

Bookmarks

player icon

As a result of selecting the Bookmark icon, the panel will appear to the right as opposed to others that take the full screen.

Subtitles

player icon

If you wish to enable Subtitles, please ensure you have a subtitle service setup and enabled in Kodi before continuing.

Information

player icon

Since all the other players I have reviewed and tested had an Information icon, I was puzzled why Unity skin did not. Well, by mistake and by experimenting I tried using the i key on my keyboard. Surprise ! It Worked. Not a must have icon to use to be honest, but it’s always handy to have.

In Conclusion

While each skin is different in not only their appearance and ease of maneuvering within, the player and icon location/function may also be different. Other than the Fast Forward/Fast Reverse or Pause/Play/Stop, etc. the other player icon vary in function and location. Hopefully these reviews have provided you the user an insight to how a skins player icons apply to you. Thank you for taking the time to read these, it was fun and enlightening creating them. Black Glass Nova Kodi 18 Skin

The Black Glass Nova, by Tgx, is the next Kodi 18 skin in this series of reviews. With the current version 7.0.1, it’s ported from MediaPortal. Not only is it easy to use, the FanArt Skin is designed for Full HD TD screens.

There’s not a lot of changes from the Krypton 17.6 version, see link here. However, there are new users starting their kodi experience with Kodi 18/Leia for the first time. These reviews are for you.

Installing Black Glass Nova Skin

At this time Black Glass Nova Skin for Kodi 18 is not found in “Get More’ while in the Skin section of Interface. However, you can download it from the GitHub site here. Simply select “Clone or download” found to the right side of the page. Then click on “Download Zip”. When prompted, save it in a location you can easily find later and install via Download from zipfile in kodi Add-on Browser.

Home Page Icons Pictures and Add-ons

When asked to “keep changes” select YES. As a result, you will see the following pages beginning with Pictures.

black glass nova

Moving from left to right, the next icon is Add-ons. The first thing you’ll notice will all the Menu Icons are the Sub-Categories found below each main icon.

Pictures as you can see has just 2 sub menus- Files and Picture add-ons. Where Add-ons has 5 Sub-Menu sections- Video add-ons Music add-onsPicture add-onsAdd-on browserPrograms. Essentially, these are all shortcuts to the menu you wish to go without going into the Settings menu. Very convenient to say the least.

black glass nova

The next two Menu’s found are Games, new for Kodi 18/Leia and Favorites. Any Games you may install or Favorite media files you have saved will appear here when selected.

black glass nova

Moving along, we see Weather with 3 sub menus of TemperatureLocationCurrent conditions. Settings will get you to File managerProfilesSystem InformationSkin Settings.

black glass nova

Search, well it’s rather self explanatory. Quit, again  based on what device you have Kodi 18 installed in will determine what features will be shown here. In this case, due to using a PC I have MinimiseRebootShutdownHibernateSuspendPower off system – Quit. See Power further down this article for more information.

black glass nova

Videos is where you’ll find what you have downloaded to your Library. The Sub menu list is rather extensive but to name just a few- Clean video libraryFilesVideo add-on playlistUpdate etc.

Music however is loaded with Sub-menus options such as- AlbumsSongsFilesTop 100 songsUpdate Audio libraryEtc. Far to many to post here, but I’m sure you get the idea.

Add-ons

black glass nova

While there are a number of shortcuts to access different areas in Kodi, selecting Add-ons will open all 5 menu options at one time.

Weather Icon

black glass nova

Also in Weather, no matter what icon selected, this is what you should expect to see. Notice the 5 day Forecast shown to the right.

Settings Icon

black glass nova

As a result of selecting the Settings Icon, this is what you’ll find. You may scroll up or down in the menu provided to the right.

Power Icon

black glass nova

Not found in the Quit sub-menu, are SettingsSkin Settings and Favorites. The shortcuts are everywhere in Black Glass Nova, it’s so easy to get anywhere you wish to go. One of the reasons this skin is in my top 3 favorite Skins to use.

black glass nova

Especially relevant is what you will come across in all of the Menu icons when you move the Mouse or Cursor (if using a remote) to the top of the page.

  1. Back.
  2. Home.
  3. Mute Volume.
  4. Volume Down.
  5. Volume Up.
  6. Settings.
  7. Quit.

File Manager

black glass nova

To open the File Manager, simply select Settings, Scroll down to File manager and click. Once open, select Add source to continue.

black glass nova

Consequently a new window will appear with a keyboard. If you have a keyboard connected to your device, you may use that instead of the one provided. Enter the URL and click on Done when completed. Please be careful and enter the url exactly as you read it. Most errors occur due to misspelling or adding/omitting a punctuation. The next screen will prompt you to enter a name for this source. Enter the one provided or create your own if it’s easier to find, it’s entirely up to you. Click OK when done.

Screenshots

black glass nova

Just an example of a few screenshots of what your Kodi 18 could look like. If interested in configuring any skin in Kodi, use this link.

In Conclusion

I was glad to see Tgx had created a Black Glass Nova skin for Kodi 18. The fanart used really does make it a pleasure to view and use. I must say it is in my top 3 skins to use for obvious reasons, but that is just my opinion, but I do believe I’m not alone here. I certainly hope you give it a try and enjoy it as much as I do. If not, it’s easy to try another isn’t it. Stop by Geeks Corner for more topics of interest.

Click Done to continue.
  • You will then be asked to provide a name for this url. You can use the one provided or use your own if it’s easier to find when installing.  Select OK to complete the process.

  • Click on get more and then select Box.

Photo A is a clear view of the Interface page seen once you accept the changes. This can be accessed easily as you’ll see further on in this review.

Photo B: Shows the main home page that will appear after selecting the Blue Back Arrow found in the top left corner as shown in photo A

Weather and Programs

box skin

  • As a result of configuring Weather found in Services, you will see basically the same as here in Photo C.
  • Photo D: Any Program add-ons you have installed can be found here.

Add-on Browser and Settings

box skin

  • Consequently, when selecting Add-ons, the Add-on Browser page (Photo E) will appear. As a result, you will be able to access any Add-ons you have installed as well as any Repos or install something from a Zip File.
  • Photo F is the Settings page. Everything is self explanatory but we will discuss File Manager later on.

Pictures and Favorites

box skin

Many of you, including myself, like to upload some personal Pictures (Photo G) or save some Favorites (Photo H) found in Kodi. These may be accessed by simply selecting the corresponding Icon.

Customize and Power

box skin

If you like to personalize your version of Kodi, select Customize. There are 3 settings, Home– Photo I, General– Photo J.

box skin

and Add-ons– Photo K. Power as seen in Photo L provides you with a number of options. The device you’re using will dictate what icons will appear. I’m using a PC w/Windows in order to create these screenshots. Yours may differ from these. One of the new features found in Kodi 18 is Games. If you’re into this option, please use this link for more information.

Movies, TV Shows and Music

box skin

A rather unusual place to store these icons, but the Box Skin is designed to be rather simplistic and basic. Movies – Photo M, TV Shows – Photo O, Music – Photo P can all be accessed by simply selecting on the corresponding Icon found in the upper left corner as shown.

File Manager

box skin

To open the File Manager select Settings, then click on File Manager. (see photo F above)

  • Click on Add Source, Photo P.
  • Then select None as seen in Photo Q.

box skin

  • You will then be prompted to enter the url address as seen in Photo R. First of all, I have to remind you to enter the url address exactly as you have found it. A very common mistake is misspelling the name or adding/excluding a letter or punctuation mark. This will always cause the a fail. Please go back and ensure there are no mistakes and correct as needed. Click DONE when ready to continue.
  • Enter the Name of the url address given, or make up your own if it’s easier to remember. Select OK when completed.
  • To install what you have entered, go to Settings, Add-ons (Photo F) then click on Install from Zip File (Photo E). Go to where you have saved the file and click to install.

In Conclusion

Finally, as with the other reviews we have done for Kryton or Leia, they are created for you the user to get the opportunity to see what the Skin has once installed. Other reviews simply provide a photo or two of the supplied screenshot. While helpful, they don’t provide any direction of where to find Add-on browser or File Manager just to mention a few.

After seeing these reviews, you may decide that Skin may not be what you wanted. Saving you the trouble of finding, installing and mucking about trying to maneuver around the skin. Please visit GeeksCorner for many other helpful topics we have to offer. Thank you for taking the time to read this review.

Kodi 18 Rapier Skin Review

The Rapier Skin will be the first in our series of Compatible Skins for Kodi 18. Also know as Leia, it is currently (at time of publishing) at version RC 5.2 but is about to be released as a final candidate.

First of all, before I proceed, I need to thank everyone who sent well wishes to myself and my Family after our devastating loss of our eldest son. Your kind words were greatly appreciated and helped us get thru this nightmare. Hence my absence, but time does heal and getting back to “work” here does help. Thank You All.

Because many devs are in the process of converting their Add-ons to be compatible with Leia, there is a limited number of add-ons working. However this list growing everyday. The same can be said for Skins as well.

What I have found is the list of “Builders” who create their own build have also designed one that works with Kodi 18. Therefore, you may see a Build reviewed here as well.

Installing Rapier Skin for Kodi 18

For the ease of creating the screenshots for this review, I have Kodi 18 RC 5.2 installed on my PC.

Developed by Scarfa and Gade, the current version 11.2.29.

  • Selecting the Cog Icon found on the main home page-Photo A
  • Then selecting Interface icon – Photo B.

  5. Events, gives you access to what you have done, installed, deleted since starting Kodi for that session.
  6. System Info, shows you the info about the device/system that kodi is installed on. As you can see in the Photo above, some of the basic info about the PC is visible. More detailed info will be shown once this icon is selected.

Add-on Browser

Rapier Skin

Finally, to access the Add-on Browser, go to Add-ons as shown in Photo A above, and select Add-on Browser.

In Conclusion

I hope you have found this article helpful and informative. As with the other and future reviews, the intent was to give the user an opportunity to see what the Rapier Skin looks and feels like. You may have considered to try a new skin, but may be reluctant to try it

These reviews hopefully will help you understand what the to expect of the Skin if installed. For more great articles on a wide variety of topics, please stop by GeeksCorner and give us a look.

If for some reason you can not locate the Rapier Skin in Interface, you can get the zip file from here.

Player Icon Settings, Part Two.

player icon

player

Player Settings Controls and Icons

Player Icon Settings can vary from one skin to another. In a perfect world these would all be the same. Sometimes the changes can appear to be drastic and complicated. Due to the design the developer of the Skin, these settings can be either very complex, or very simple.

In Part Two of our series of Tasso’s Tips©®, our focus will be showing you the reader, where each Skin’s Player settings are. Most of all, showing you how to access some underused player controls. For more info on Kodi player settings, see this link. Part One of this series can be found here.

In part two of Player Settings, we will look at Black Glass Nova Skin, Metropolis Skin, SiO2 Skin and Rapier Skin.

Black Glass Nova Player Settings

player

The player settings found in Black Glass Nova skin look rather extensive and confusing for the first time user. But once you get thru what each Icon does you will discover that 50% are really not needed. Because we all know what the Pause, Play, Fast Forward, etc. stand for I’ll only show what the others are. Starting with Section A in the photo:

  1. Back.
  2. Home.
  3. Mute.
  4. Volume Down.
  5. Volume Up.
  6. Menu.
  7. Settings.
  8. Quit.

Section B, moving left to right: Subtitles, Video, Audio and Subtitle, Bookmarks, Playlist and Media Info Settings.

Subtitle Settings

player

First of all I must say that there are far too many settings that really aren’t needed in this skin. And subtitles is prime example. It’s a shame because I really like this skin and the only downside at least for me is the overkill of player icons. But this is why we do these reviews to show you what to expect and decide for yourself if it’s best suited for you.

As a result of clicking on Subtitles, a new list of Icons will appear below:

  • Enable Subtitles– Because Subtitles Enabled is the default setting, you must select this to disable. However, once disabled, you will be left with Download Subtitles and Audio Language. Another example of overkill in my opinion.
  • Download SubtitlesPhoto B is the screenshot of what you will see after selecting this icon.
  • Offset Subtitles– Use this option to adjust the speed of the text as it appears.
  • Subtitle Language– Just a reminder of the language set for subtitles.
  • Audio Language– Same as the above, but once again a feature that came done in Kodi settings. Go to SystemPlayer SettingsLanguage– and make the adjustments there.

Video and Audio Player Settings

player

Photos C and D are examples of the Video Settings and the Audio and Subtitle Settings.

Bookmarks and Playlists

player

Photo E gives a wide selection of where to Bookmark this media file if you need to save it for viewing at a later time. Photo F, Playlists, baffles me to be honest. I really do not see a need for this option at all. To exit any of the these settings, use the back button on the remote, right click if using a mouse or hit the ESC key on the keyboard.

Media Info

player

Finally, the Media Info icon. This provides a brief description of the Move file as well as Resolution, Video ratio, Audio for example. Once you get used to settings icons, you’ll find it’s a decent player to use.

Metropolis Player Settings

player

The Metropolis Skin is one of my top 5 Skins to use, for many reasons. But the player settings icons are probably the main reason. very easy to use, understandable, and only the ones (in my opinion) that we all use the most are available.

Maybe it’s the layout and presentation you see once a movie file starts, just like the example shown above. As we’ve mentioned in previous skin player reviews, we’ll pass on the description of the usual most common settings:

  1. Playlist. This icon is disabled and really isn’t needed so you can skip past that one.
  2. Bookmarks.
  3. Subtitles.
  4. Random. This icon is primarily used when playing Audio files, unlike Playlist, this is enabled and can also be set for Repeat as well. Using this setting for a movie file is a personal choice.
  5. Video Settings.
  6. Audio Settings.

Bookmarks and Subtitles

player

Another reason I enjoy this skin is how transparent the settings are when selected. I guess it’s more of a personal choice here, but I find it easy on the eyes. Photo A is an example of Bookmarks. Photo B is Subtitles, if you do not have a service for subtitles enabled, follow this link to find out how. This must be enabled in kodi prior to searching for any subtitle.

Video and Audio/Subtitle Player Settings

player

Photo A- Video Settings allows you to alter anything that will affect how you view a media file. Brightness, Contrast, etc.

Photo B- You can adjust the Volume as well as enable/disable Subtitles as well as correct the offset or sync the text if needed.

Media Info

player

Media Info or in this case Debug is a favorite of mine. This is an underused or misunderstood setting that many overlook. I use it to confirm what the description of this file is when it comes to the resolution. For example, you may think you’re streaming a 1080p file when in fact it may only be 720 or it may read as  5-1 Audio. In this example it is 5-1 as well as showing me that it is using the H.264 Codec. To initiate this option, hit the Up button on the remote or if using a keyboard, use the Up Directional Arrow. Another way to get the same info is to hit the letter O on the keyboard. Most noteworthy is this can only be done if you are using a keyboard connected to your device (Android Box, Tablet, Laptop or PC) either wired or wireless.

Rapier Player Settings

player

The Player Icon Settings in the Rapier Skin is somewhat similar to Metropolis with the exception of where some of the “Specialty Icon settings” are located. I love this setup to be honest. First of all, you have the icons you would be using more often in a central location, easy to find and use. The rest are off to the side, where they should be :

  1. Exit. I fail to see why this option is even offered when the same affect is achieved by selecting Stop.
  2. Info. Your one stop icon for all the info available for a stream. More about this shortly.
  3. Bookmarks.
  4. Subtitles.
  5. Audio and Subtitle Settings.
  6. Video Settings.

Information Settings

player

This feature is only found (so far from all skins that I’ve researched) in the Rapier Skin. To open this feature, click on the i , as shown in Photo A. Rather than showing you one option to view, it actually supplies Three (3) These are :

  • General Information. Photo B has the example of that, basic description of the movie file and the Resolution plus Audio etc. settings.
  • Technical Information. See below.
  • Debug Information. See below.

player

  • Photo C – Technical or as I like to call it the Codec information. This provides more information about the actual stream itself. If you are using a keyboard, you can get the same info by hitting the Letter O.
  • Photo D – Debug, for those of you who are into the real technical aspects of streams then this is for you. Long story short, this info basically provides what is happening to your device and kodi, plus the “load” on the CPU.

Bookmarks and Subtitle Settings

player

Photo EBookmarks, from here you may select where to restart the movie file if you have to stop for a period of time.

Photo F– If you have a Subtitle Service enabled in Kodi, this is what you will see.

Audio and Video Player Settings

player

  • Photo H– Audio and Subtitle Settings.
  • Photo I– Video Settings.

An excellent Player to use, nothing fancy or complicated about it. All you need is right there in front of you, another favorite of mine. Give it try and see how you like it.

SiO2 Player Settings

player

The SiO2 Player has a different way of accessing the settings. While most other players have the settings visible along the bottom of the screen, SiO2 as shown in Photo A, requires you to select an Arrow (#2) to open a pull down menu. Option #1 has the basic everyday icons we all know about. Photo B shows what settings are located within the pull down menu:

  1. Info– A very brief description of the movie file as you can see in Photo B.
  2. Audio & Subtitles.
  3. Video Settings.
  4. Bookmarks.
  5. Video Codec.

Audio and Subtitle Settings

player

Photo CAudio and Subtitle settings also allows you to adjust the Audio offset as well as the Subtitle offset if either one is “out of sync”.

Photo DVideo Settings where you can change the brightness/contrast among other options.

Bookmarks

player

Probably the easiest setting of all to use.

Video Codec Player Setting

player

Finally, one of my favorite settings, as you can tell from my other articles. Once you get to know what each section stands for, I think you will agree. This will show you the exact Video Codec, Resolution, Number of Audio Channels and most importantly the CPU load on the device.

In Conclusion

I hope you have enjoyed reading part two of Player Icon Settings as much as I have in creating this article. Part Three will be looking at Titan, Transparency, Unity and Aeon MQ7 Skins Player settings. Understanding how a Skins player settings work is just as important as the Skin itself. Probably the most used feature of any Skin. Not only do you use it for Movie Files, there are TV Shows and Audio Files being played as well. Especially relevant is Part One, if you have missed it, you can see it here.

Player Icon Settings, Part One.

player icon

Player Settings Controls and Icons

Player Icon Settings can vary from one skin to another. In a perfect world these would all be the same. Sometimes the changes can appear to be drastic and complicated. Due to the design the developer of the Skin, these settings can be either very complex, or very simple.

In this next series of Tasso’s Tips©®, our focus will be showing you the reader, where each Skin’s Player settings are. Most of all, showing you how to access some underused player controls. For more info on Kodi player settings, see this link.

Amber Skin Player Icons

player

Because each skin is not created equally, you will find some like the Amber Skin shown here have made it rather simple. Most skins stick to the basics : SubtitlesBookmarksAudio & SubtitleVideo Settings. These may not appear in the same order as shown above, but we’ll walk you thru each skin as we move along. One nice feature with the Amber Skin is the info shown concerning the Resolution, Audio, etc once the movie file is started.

Amber Player Subtitle

player

As a result of selecting the first icon, you will notice it is the Subtitle section. You will be given the option of:

  • Downloading subtitles (this must be enabled and set up in kodi prior, See this Link on how to enable Subtitles.
  • Subtitle Offset, this will let you alter the speed of the text as it appears if not in sync.
  • Sort Descending allows you to organize how the downloaded Subtitles appear.
  • Enabled, Off or On. Your choice.

Bookmarks and Information

player

  • Photo A – Is what you see after selecting the second icon, Bookmark. This skin gives you a list of the “chapter names” as opposed to the time like other skins do. Why should I bookmark a movie? Maybe you get interrupted for a reason and need to stop viewing for a period of time. This feature will allow you to return to exact place you left from.
  • Photo B – Once you have clicked the i Icon, it will give a brief description of the movies plot.

Audio & Video Settings

player

Finally, after selecting the Cog Icon, you will have two choices. Audio & Subtitle Settings as shown in Photo C. And Video Settings shown in Photo D.

For more information about the Amber Skin, please click Here.

APP TV Player Icons

player

In our next Skin, the APP TV Skin has a very simple set of player control icons. Since we all know what the basic icons do such as Pause, Stop, Play, etc. we’ll concentrate on the other options and their locations. First of all, in the top photo above, you are given the Information about the media stream. Resolution, Codec, Audio, etc. are shown to the right. To the left there are three icons,

  • CC is for Subtitles and is represented by the lower photo.
  • Speaker is for the Audio Settings.
  • Camera is for the Video Settings.

Audio and Video Settings

player

As a result of selecting either A- Audio Settings Icon or B- Video Settings Icon, you now have access to adjust the individual settings as needed. Also, select Close to exit each of these screen options.

Bookmark and Volume Settings

player

Another set of player settings can be found to the far right as shown in Photo A. Once you select the 3 dots, a new set of options will appear. These are:

  • Bookmark – the open book will give you access to the Bookmark Option as shown in Photo B.
  • 4 Horizontal Lines – Unfortunately, this feature is not enabled, so disregard.
  • Speaker + – Increases the Volume.
  • Speaker – – Decreases the Volume.

Player Codec Information

player

Finally, as we review these player settings, occasionally a skin does not provide the Codec or the Stream information. A very easy way to find this is to select the O Key if using a wired/wireless keyboard on the device you’re using. Consequently, this feature is found on Kodi Krypton series and the new Leia (Kodi 18) only. Hit the O key again to remove.

Arctic Zephyr Player Icons

player

The Player settings found in Arctic Zephyr are really easy to use and find. With the exception of 3D Mode not enabled, this can be setup in Kodi for those who are interested in 3D.

Audio & Video Settings

player

I’ve combined both screenshots to save some space, but you will only see one or the other as individual pages. You will notice these same settings are found in all Skin player settings. Don’t forget to select Close to exit.

Subtitles

player

The Subtitle Icon offers two options:

  • Download, which is what you see in the Photo.
  • Disabled. I happen to have Subtitles disabled in this skin, simply click again to change to Enabled.

Extra Info & Bookmarks

player

First of all, lets deal with Extra Info. Most of the skins I have found with this option, at least for me can be a real PITA to return to the movie file. Maybe it’s me but I always seem to find myself looking at the download page after I click Play as shown in the top Photo. So I tend to not use this option.

Bookmarks, once again you’re given the option to pick a “chapter” to save a place if you have to shut down for any reason.

Player Codec Info

In Conclusion

Stay tuned for more player icon settings coming soon. Because there are so many to review, we have divided this series into 3 parts. Aeon MQ7, Black Glass Nova, Metropolis, SiO2 and Unity skins are just a sample of what we will be showing. Thank you for taking the time to read this article.
