The US set to ban Huawei as the UK embraces them

Rumours suggest that U.S. President Donald Trump will sign an executive order this week blocking American companies from using any telecoms equipment made by Huawei.

What is interesting is the UK seems set on embracing the Chinese company for their 5G infrastructure. The UK government is still carrying out a review of the telecoms sector that has the potential to restrict or even block the use of Huawei’s kit to address cyber-security concerns.

Vodafone has confirmed that they have been allowed to use Huawei’s radio access network (Ran) gear, which allows smartphones and other devices to wirelessly connect to their systems.

The report of Trump blocking sales comes from three anonymous U.S. officials told Reuters
Trump is however expected to invoke the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, giving him the authority to control commerce
in response to a national emergency.

Vodafone will be switching on 5G from July 3rd and will be available for:

  • Birmingham
  • Bristol
  • Cardiff
  • Glasgow
  • Manchester
  • Liverpool
  • London

Users will need a 5G-compatible smartphone or router to take advantage of the technology.
